Pigmo 00

The font is now updated to include JIS Level 1 and 2 kanji characters

Pigmo 00 (ピグモ00) is a creative, little hard to read free Japanese font. The creator of the font said that he started working on this font since 2008, now has the common characters including 1000+ kanji (education kanji), and is preparing to increase the glyphs to include JIS Level 1 and 2 characters.

Kanjyuku Gothic

It’s near Christmas and Flop Design released a new open source font called “Kanjyuku Gothic” that is available to download. Unlike other Gothic fonts, this font has matured and retro feeling to it, just like well brewed beers. The Hiragana, Katakana and alphabets are originally designed by Flop Design, while others like Kanji was taken from IPAex Gothic.

SanafonYu (さなフォン悠) is a handwriting free font from Sanafon series. According to the creator Sana, after creating other design fonts, she wanted to have a more relaxing and casual version of a font, thus the creation of this. The design of the font is quite similar to sibling font Sanafonmaru, however the latter has better readability.

Takumi Yutori Font (Takumiゆとりフォント) is a free Japanese handwriting font that reflected characteristics of the “Yutori Generation”. Yutori Generation is the generation where they taken the “Yutori Education” where it was much flexible, pressure-free and less strict. Kaiso Makina B (廻想体 マキナB) is a tall, angular Japanese font that is free to download. Taking the reference from the katakana characters in Morikawa’s Ryobundo (森川龍文堂), the designer uses his interpretation of modernising the font design and made it tall.

The font comes with the essential hiragana, katakana, romaji and fulfilling the JIS Level 1 kanji characters, plus some from Level 2. You can use this font for commercial purposes.

Pop Rum Cute (ポプらむキュート) is a rounded, cute but slightly hard to read free Japanese font that you can download. The design point of this font is each letters are trying to fill up the square box as much as possible, creating the fat, bloated and congested sense, while at the same time sacrificing the readability.

This font comes with the standard Japanese characters and including more than 3000 kanji characters where 2900 plus of them are from JIS Kanji Level 1, and the rest from Level 2.

Ankoku Zonji (暗黒ゾン字) is the latest scary style free font series from Ankoku Koubou. Komorebi Gothic (木漏れ日ゴシック) is a casual looking Japanese sans serif font. This font was created with the base from another open source font Ume Gothic. Togalite (トガリテ) is a display style free Japanese font which comes with 6 font weight. The font was designed based off the popular open source font M+, the difference is that the edges of the characters are sharpened and protruding out, giving the sense of thorn.

The name Togalite is a combined word of French word “égalité” which means “balanced” and Japanese word “Togaru (尖る)” which means sharp edge.

Hachi Maru Pop

Hachi Maru Pop is a cute roundish free font that was inspired by the font style that was once trended in the 1980s in Japan. Such font style was quite popular among the teenage girls in that era. Hachi Maru in Japanese means 80, and they certainly incorporates the essence of the cute culture of the 80s, while the creator made some adjustments by injecting the modern design style into it.

Hachi Maru Pop comes with the standard Japanese characters with an extensive library of Kanji characters. Since the character design is more pop-py, it might not be suitable for a smaller font size design due to the potential readability issue. Nevertheless, this font is open-sourced, and is totally free to use for both personal and commercial projects.
